about

Bibliotheca, the debut album by London transplant Gavin Leesam, is the sound of its protagonist summoning all the key electronic sub-genres of recent years with the UK’s capital as its blank canvas. Pivoting on the euphoric rush of house music, the awkward bounce of garage and dubstep – Leesam forges a sound that tips its hat to what has come before but is always moving forward; Bibliotheca is no pastiche to the past. As if to document the moment the sun descends from the sky to when it finally reappears; Bibliotheca, due out 1st June via Casseblank Records, invokes a nocturnal hue – through its layered waves of electronics, chopped up vocal samples, skittering beats and intermittent waves of expansive guitar motifs. Real Doubt opens the album with squelching electronic pulses and clipped vocal ticks with a slow dub-like feel, while Give It All embellishes this formula with an irresistible vocal hook and a bubbling 4am hedonistic club vibe. Jittering beats and elongated guitar drones populate the album’s eponymous track, found at the heart of Bibliotheca; this is where Leesam pushes the twilight nuances to the forefront of his primary offering. Towards the end of Bibliotheca, the throbbing swell of Confetti envelopes you with a hypnotic whirlpool of repetitive beats and warping sounds while Desert Fathers harnesses a melancholic euphoric surge of deep siren-like noises and a head-bobbing beat that stretches for a near 8 minutes. A homage to London’s inspiration on Leesam’s work permeates on two interlude tracks; Interlude 1 (Reborn in Hackney) and Interlude 2 (German Shepherd), the pair bound together by interspersed static, as if travelling through the urban sprawl at night as your car radio tunes in and out of the city’s pirate stations – Balearic piano loops are offset against crunching beats whilst varied sounds whizz in and out of focus. Built on the foundation of minimalism and a restrained kinetic energy, Bibliotheca is its own living organism and one that’s sound is unequivocally 2018.
