about

Abstract Typography is the brainchild of multi-instrumentalist and mercurial talent, Stan Bull - with the fruits of his labour taking shape via the delightfully fuzzy-garage rock of Dawn Chorus EP, due out 1st June via Casseblank Records. Bull’s primary offering harnesses a carefree rock ‘n’ roll swagger, one that cuts a dash with strutting grooves, nonchalantly cool vocals and liberal uses of scuzzy static. Grasp The Nettle kicks off the EP as it means to go on; in stomping, ragged fashion with pockets of psychedelic giddiness poking out amongst the frazzled riffs. There’s an impulsiveness that’s hard to ignore about Dawn Chorus EP and this is typified by Grasp The Nettle’s loose, carefree abandon. Charmed Ridge finds Abstract Typography wade into more expansive waters with the pace dropped down a notch but a woozy, hypnotic wall of sound stepping into the limelight. It’s an altogether moodier and darker take on Abstract Typography’s lo-fi garage punk, that has Bull reflecting on the inevitable march of time “now I’ve seen my future completely disappear”. Further ruminations on faded youthfulness crop up on the urgent I Feel Better Already with Bull pondering “my suspicions led to an inconvenient truth and now I feel ashamed at my entire wasted youth” as twanged guitar lines sporadically morph into frazzled explosions of noise coupled with rapid, pacey drums. The EP is brought to a close by the intimate strum-along of Magnolia, that commences with a lonesome acoustic lilt but gradually swells with the sound of fuzzed up guitar motifs and delicately nuanced percussion.
Dawn Chorus EP shines the light on Abstract Typography’s knack of crafting a collection of songs that bristle with a garage rock roughness but with an ear for an addictive pop hook.
